Glamours of publishing

image

I asked my erstwhile publisher if he could send me some copies of my book, as I had run out. He sent me 80.

Writing, it turns out, is easy. Publishing is not so difficult. Getting books in stores and into people’s mitts, on the other hand, is not for the timid or easily discouraged, particularly for the small or self-published.

After some cajoling and begging, my erstwhile publisher managed to convince the Quebec stores of the Chapters/Indigo chain to stock my 2013 collection of columns, Don’t Everyone Jump at Once. And that, it seems, is where they sat: in stock. I never saw them on any shelves. Eventually, Indigo returned the unsold books. And now I have them, lovingly stored in my attic, in all their glorious redundancy.

Anyone want one?

Regular $18.00, yours for only $16.00 (plus postage). That’s a guaranteed laugh per dollar. (I guarantee nothing.)

Willing to negotiate and commiserate in the comments section.

I'm Canadian so I pronounce it "Aboot." No, I don't! I don't know any Canadian who says "aboot." Damnable lies! But I do know this Canadian is all about humour (with a U) and satire. Come by. I don't bite, or as we Canadians say, "beet."

    I’d like to buy one.

  2. I was able to get “You’re Not Going to Eat That, Are You?” on Kindle, so how do those of us south of the border get a hold of this one?

  3. garym6059 says:

Good luck on getting it to the masses.

  4. List of X says:

I just ordered YNGTETAY on the Kindle this weekend, so i’ll take a copy of DJEAO too.

  5. Carrie Rubin says:

Ah yes, the joys of unsold paper books stacked in our closet. I’ve got a few of those myself. I’m hoping they’ll vanish once the next book comes out. It’s all about the wishful thinking…

  6. Lol. Are your kids starving or anything? I’ll think about it, if yes. We’re pretty broke over here too though.

  7. goldfish says:

I paid full price for mine like a sucker! I would like a two dollar discount on the copy I bought.

  8. Paul says:

    Have it – what’s next? 😀

  9. Karen says:

    I’m waiting for the movie.

Actually, I’m waiting for the What’s Next Novel (not sure if it has a title). I read the excerpt posted way back when and loved it. Look forward to reading the rest.

Funny, I bought one and managed to lose it before I even opened it. I’ve now consolidated all our books to the garage. Waiting for that magic moment it reappears. I think I put it somewhere special.

  11. McGraw-Hill sent me 12 copies of my book when it was published than offered me a 10% discount on it for additional copies. 😝

  12. Trent Lewin says:

Dude, you wrote a book? Where the ‘eck have I been? I may very well be interested in some light reading material.

  13. Ned's Blog says:

I’d like you to know that when we moved about a month ago, I was relentless and devoid of all feeling when it came eliminating clutter, such as old books, clothing and — until my wife intervened — at least one teenager. The fact that your book is on the shelf in our new house should tell you something. And no, the shelf would still stay up without your book.

  14. Will you honor my Indigo Plum card? I’m impressed that you’ve written a book, even if it isn’t a best seller yet.

  15. Well, I’ve already got mine, thanks, anyway. It occupied a place on my bed stand until I squeezed every last laugh out of its pages.

I accidentally read “$16.00 (plus postage)” as “$16.00 (plus storage).” Seriously.

And on a more serious note, this is why I won’t attempt a book. Call me a coward but I couldn’t face this.

      $16.00 plus hostage.
It’s not so bad. It’s balanced by the kind people who do buy and tell you how much they liked/appreciated it. Tips the scales, actually. I think it’s more discouraging to be the publisher. Both my books were put out by first-time publishers. The experience turned them into last-time publishers.

  16. I need one of these. I think I have your address around here somewhere (stalking of blog writers is a hobby, not a full-time job). If not, I’ll hit you with an email.
