I asked my erstwhile publisher if he could send me some copies of my book, as I had run out. He sent me 80.
Writing, it turns out, is easy. Publishing is not so difficult. Getting books in stores and into people’s mitts, on the other hand, is not for the timid or easily discouraged, particularly for the small or self-published.
After some cajoling and begging, my erstwhile publisher managed to convince the Quebec stores of the Chapters/Indigo chain to stock my 2013 collection of columns, Don’t Everyone Jump at Once. And that, it seems, is where they sat: in stock. I never saw them on any shelves. Eventually, Indigo returned the unsold books. And now I have them, lovingly stored in my attic, in all their glorious redundancy.
Anyone want one?
Regular $18.00, yours for only $16.00 (plus postage). That’s a guaranteed laugh per dollar. (I guarantee nothing.)
Willing to negotiate and commiserate in the comments section.
I’d like to buy one.
Thanks. Send me your address at ross_murray@sympatico.ca and I’ll figure it all out.
I was able to get “You’re Not Going to Eat That, Are You?” on Kindle, so how do those of us south of the border get a hold of this one?
Good luck on getting it to the masses.
If so, I’ll be laughing my masses off.
I just ordered YNGTETAY on the Kindle this weekend, so i’ll take a copy of DJEAO too.
Do you accept PayPal?
That’s timing.
I’m going to work on the PayPal thing. I can ship from U.S., which will be cheaper. Just have to figure out how to configure that.
In the meantime, send me your address at ross_murray@sympatico.ca.
And thanks!
Ah yes, the joys of unsold paper books stacked in our closet. I’ve got a few of those myself. I’m hoping they’ll vanish once the next book comes out. It’s all about the wishful thinking…
Because of storage limitations, I get it.
Lol. Are your kids starving or anything? I’ll think about it, if yes. We’re pretty broke over here too though.
I paid full price for mine like a sucker! I would like a two dollar discount on the copy I bought.
Well, you know, it’s like buying anything; you never know when the sales/unloading are going to hit. Howzabout I come over and read you a chapter?
Have it – what’s next? 😀
Working on that. I have an “Interesting; we’ll be in touch” from a new publisher regarding my novel. Stay tuned.
I’m waiting for the movie.
Actually, I’m waiting for the What’s Next Novel (not sure if it has a title). I read the excerpt posted way back when and loved it. Look forward to reading the rest.
Oh wait, I just searched your archives and it does have a title. A Hole in the Ground. There.
I have a rejection, a “we mostly liked it, but…”, two non-replies and a recent “interesting, we’ll get back to you.” In flux, you might say.
Did you tell them that I loved the excerpt? ‘Cause that might make all the difference . . .
I’m on the verge of sending out my first query. I need to finish this bottle of Scotch first. Ah, liquid courage.
Worked for Hemingway. For a while.
Query away, Hemingway.
Funny, I bought one and managed to lose it before I even opened it. I’ve now consolidated all our books to the garage. Waiting for that magic moment it reappears. I think I put it somewhere special.
Oh boy. I’ve seen how long things stay in archives in your house.
Go to bed my friend
Yes. Yes. On my way.
McGraw-Hill sent me 12 copies of my book when it was published than offered me a 10% discount on it for additional copies. 😝
I have only 12 friends, so that would have been okay with me.
Dude, you wrote a book? Where the ‘eck have I been? I may very well be interested in some light reading material.
Email me and I’ll hook you up. ross_murray@sympatico.ca
I’d like you to know that when we moved about a month ago, I was relentless and devoid of all feeling when it came eliminating clutter, such as old books, clothing and — until my wife intervened — at least one teenager. The fact that your book is on the shelf in our new house should tell you something. And no, the shelf would still stay up without your book.
Not even for levelling purposes? I’m honored without a U!
Wow! There is no greater compliment than a U-less honor.
Oh Ross! Don’t be seduced by the U – less world south of the border. “We are the Americans, U will be assimilated, resistance is futile.”
Hahaha! 🙂
😎
Don’t forget to let me know when your Part II is published. 🙂
Hi Lynette! 2 and 3 are up and published starting here: https://julienoblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/melanie-part-2/ Enjoy!
“Ftile.”
Ohhhhhh, very sharp – definitely adds value to the joke. There’s a reason you entertain for a living – you are gooooood! ❗ ⭐ ⭐ ➡ 🍸
Vowel humour: it’s gonna be big.
Will you honor my Indigo Plum card? I’m impressed that you’ve written a book, even if it isn’t a best seller yet.
I have a hard enough time figuring out PayPal, but I appreciate the thought. And thanks.
Well, I’ve already got mine, thanks, anyway. It occupied a place on my bed stand until I squeezed every last laugh out of its pages.
I accidentally read “$16.00 (plus postage)” as “$16.00 (plus storage).” Seriously.
And on a more serious note, this is why I won’t attempt a book. Call me a coward but I couldn’t face this.
$16.00 plus hostage.
It’s not so bad. It’s balanced by the kind people who do buy and tell you how much they liked/appreciated it. Tips the scales, actually. I think it’s more discouraging to be the publisher. Both my books were put out by first-time publishers. The experience turned them into last-time publishers.
I need one of these. I think I have your address around here somewhere (stalking of blog writers is a hobby, not a full-time job). If not, I’ll hit you with an email.
This was what I wanted to send you, in fact, but I didn’t have any copies at the time. Careful what you wish for.
